The Heart in the Jar
And what a triumph! What a pride!
To hold a heart outside a man,
And watch its intricate ebb-tide
Of life, unhindered by a plan
Of soul or circumstance—to hold
And watch a human heart, controlled
By science in a crystal jar,
Where all its pulses are your own,
And you its silent god and star,
Upon a dazzling, white throne!
